One year on from our 60th anniversary, everyone at RMJM continued to build on historic foundations, producing forward-thinking architecture that pleased clients and critics alike. Numerous high-profile projects were won and delivered, exciting staff additions were revealed and prestigious awards were gratefully received. While we plan for a busy 2018, below we’ll take a look back at some of RMJM’s highlights from what has been an incredibly productive 12 months.
RMJM’s European studios had an especially fruitful year with our Istanbul and Serbia studios, in particular, grabbing headlines for a series of impressive projects. G Tower (a new vertical village in Istanbul’s skyline), Optimist Residence Fikirtepe (an iconic combination of traditional Turkish architecture and modern architecture), and Mahall Ankara (a new development on the west of the Turkish capital) were all completed in 2017, giving RMJM Istanbul their best year yet. Furthermore, the studio was also recognised at the World Architecture Festival for their work on the Grand Pera, sales of Mint E5 began and Metropol was named as the 8th tallest building in Europe. RMJM Serbia went from strength to strength this year with the news they are to continue delivering several projects within Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport, the busiest in Russia. The studio was appointed to design the interior of two inter-terminal stations, the facade, interiors and parking for Terminal B as well as Terminal buildings C1 and C2. With all eyes on Russia as the 2018 FIFA World Cup inches closer, RMJM Serbia is planning for their busiest ever year in 2018.
RMJM Dubai enjoyed another successful year which saw the studio win yet another Cityscape Global Award in the Future (Retail) category for the Gate Avenue at DIFC development. The Gate Avenue Mosque in the DIFC was selected by Gulf News as one of the mosques of the future and referred to as ‘a beacon of modern Islamic design’. The studio also made notable appearances at the Empowering Architects Conference and the World of Facades, no doubt contributing to it being listed in the AD50 Middle East. This year, our Dubai studio also welcomed new additions to their studio with Raymond Park taking over as CEO from Harry Downie, who retired in May, and Nadine Watson who was appointed as Head of Interior Design.
RMJM Arta Tehran continued to grow at a rapid pace after winning projects for the interior design of the Iran Historical Car Museum in the last 18 months. Arta Rostami Ravari, Managing Director Arta Tehran, was also selected to act as one of five judges at the Architecture Competition for the design of Jazmooryan National Museum in Kerman Province, Iran.
In Asia, RMJM Red’s Zhuhai St. Regis Hotel & Office Tower was officially named the 10th tallest building to be completed in 2017, topping out at 323 meters (1059 feet), and received worldwide attention when it hosted an exhibition tennis match on its roof. The building has also recently been honoured as a China New Architectural Landmark, the first of its kind in Zhuhai, as it continues to garner both national and international acclaim.
Elsewhere, RMJM Healthcare continued to expand into sectors it sees as fundamental to the company’s long-term success by entering a unique partnership with CasaSolo, a studio dedicated exclusively to the design and development of world-class medical centres.
And to cap the year off we celebrated the annual RMJM Design Awards where we saw our international studios come together in Istanbul and toast an incredible year. You can see all the winners from the night here.
