Initially established in 1965, Church House has undergone renovations over a period of years. It is situated on Kampala road, the main business street in Kampala’s CBD. Symbion was contracted by the provincial office of the Church of Uganda to redesign the existing building façade and interiors in a fresh light. On completion the building will house the office of the Archbishop of Uganda, retail spaces for shops, restaurants, a bank and other commercial interests. The aim of letting out spaces is to enable the Church of Uganda organisation financial sustainability.
The brand new design comprises a screen detail to the building’s lower façade, which provokes a play of light and shade in the space. Fully clad exterior walls are contrasted with glass curtain walls giving visibility into the different levels.
Two entry points have been integrated; the main entrance off of Kampala road and the second off of Duster street.
This structure rises fifteen storeys high, including two basement parking levels. On the ground floor, a main lobby with a central staircase leads into the retail facilities. A smaller lift lobby with private access serves the office tower. To effectively interpret a contemporary design, the use of concealed lighting, high quality finishes such as polished granite and porcelain tiles, frameless glass, textured paint and brushed stainless steel have been employed. Church of Uganda’s logo and corporate identity will also form an attribute of the design. The choice of finishes symbolise the church’s strong foundations and adaptation to a modern era.
