Rising 270 metres above Tianjin’s Haihe River, Bohai Bank Tower is a 55-storey headquarters development created for China Bohai Bank. Designed by RMJM, the project establishes a significant corporate landmark along Haihe East Road while responding to the scale and character of Tianjin’s rapidly evolving urban skyline.

The architectural concept draws on the idea of strength, permanence and stability, qualities associated with the institution the building represents. The tower’s massing is carefully composed to reduce the visual impact of its substantial scale and to maintain a balanced relationship with the surrounding city and riverfront. Its orientation maximises views towards the Haihe River, while the overall composition gives the headquarters a strong and recognisable presence.

At ground and podium levels, the project addresses the relationship between a major corporate headquarters and the surrounding public realm. A glazed atrium creates a generous internal civic space described as an “urban living room,” helping organise circulation while providing a more open and welcoming transition between the city and the bank’s internal functions. Clear functional zoning and simplified circulation were also central to the planning strategy, supporting the operational requirements of a major financial institution.

The project combines architectural expression with significant technical complexity. Its composite steel-and-concrete structure, high-performance façade and integrated building-management systems were developed to support the demands of a supertall corporate workplace. Intelligent HVAC controls, digital building systems and lighting strategies were incorporated to help reduce operational energy consumption.

RMJM’s involvement extended beyond the architectural design to include interior design and landscape services, allowing the tower, its internal environments and external setting to be developed as a coordinated whole. Completed in 2015, Bohai Bank Tower has since become one of Tianjin’s prominent commercial high-rises and a major landmark along the Haihe waterfront.
