The Beijing Olympic Multi-Purpose Arena was one of the four principal venues on the Beijing Olympic Green Boulevard during the 2008 Olympic Games. The commission involved the masterplanning of the 121,000 m² mixed-use site, the architectural design of the 220,000 m² convention centre and the associated commercial site and an Intercontinental Hotel. The complex needed to be able to accommodate as flexible a design as possible, primarily due to it having to fulfil two different lives.
During the Games, the complex hosted the biggest media centre in Olympian history, as well as the Beijing Olympic Fencing & Modern Pentathlon Venues. After the Games, the Olympic venue re-opened as China National Convention Centre in 2009 and became a destination in its own right.
