RMJM was commissioned for the design of a 120 bed care home. The exemplar building is designed to have a non-institutional character, scale and layouts making it closely related in architecture and living environment to the two storey family housing which surrounds adjacent.
Arranged with 4 residential wings, all of which are 2 storeys tall, the design creates attractive south facing courtyards accessible directly by the residents.
The wings are laid out to provide living units of 15 and include one specialist for dementia patients. The social spaces are designed to assist way-finding and enable supervision from the staff.
The rooms are designed to allow residents to stay in their rooms by accommodating their changing needs through time. The building achieved a BREEAM “Excellent” status and is connected to a district heating system.
