Overview

RMJM was commissioned in 2004 by Forth Ports to lead the design team for the creation of a 20-year development framework which was intended to set the pattern of development in Leith Docks. Potentially on one of the most significant brownfield regeneration sites in the UK, the framework had the capacity to deliver a mixed, balanced and inclusive waterfront community.

RMJM prepared Supplementary Planning Guidance (SPG) documentation for an area of approximately 170 hectares, including the existing docks and the historic core of Leith.

The vision outlined by the SPG documents was to provide an extension of Leith and the city of Edinburgh, integrating both the old and new areas in one waterfront community. RMJM established ambitious targets for sustainability, with the ultimate aim of making Leith a world-class flagship for sustainable development.
