RMJM were appointed by the Medical Research Council in 2005 to design a new building for the world-famous Laboratory of Molecular Biology at Addenbrooke’s in Cambridge, UK. The new facility provides highly flexible laboratory space for 400 researchers, many of whom are world leaders in their field and responsible for ground breaking discoveries and inventions including the structure of DNA and DNA sequencing.

The design concept for the 24,000 m² laboratory was based on the ‘X’ form of dividing cells, informing the sectioning of three main areas linked by a unifying central space to act as an active hub at the heart of the building.

This space has an important role to play, encouraging interaction between the different research groups and reinforcing the sense of togetherness within the research community.

The Queen and His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh opened the building in May of 2013.
