In the heart of the city, a tall arch frames the entrance to Muttrah Souq, the oldest and by far most well known marketplace in Oman. RMJM’s proposed design had the goal of retaining much of the site’s old world charm with row upon row of matchbox size shops, set in winding tiny lanes under a palm-frond canopied roof.
A revamping of the space was conceptualised as the Souq connects all parts of the layout and provides a shaded pedestrian route and grand arrival spaces.
