The Tower of London is one of Britain’s best-known historic sites and a major tourist attraction. RMJM was commissioned to improve the quality of the visitor experience and interpretation of the site. The proposed improvements were intended as a catalyst for the regeneration of the area around the Tower and were submitted for National Lottery funding.
Working with Historic Royal Palaces and leading a multi-skilled team, RMJM developed concepts for design improvements to the setting and environs of the Tower of London in a study commissioned by HRP in 1995.
National Lottery Heritage funding was granted following the study, with a partnership approach offering strategic solutions to problems which cannot be tackled effectively by parties acting in isolation.
RMJM were involved in several projects at the Tower, including the refurbishment and representation of the thirteenth century royal palace (The Wakefield and St Thomas’ Towers), the rehousing of the Crown Jewels and the representation of the White Tower.
